Unresolved Relations

Unresolved Relations is a photography and research project that explores the complex and often overlooked history of Poland-Ukraine relations through a deeply personal and historical lens. Inspired by my grandfather, Janusz Sliwinski, and his memories of Przemyśl, this project delves into the impact of the Volhynia massacre (1943-1945), shifting borders after World War II, and the lasting tensions that continue to shape identity and migration today. Combining archival documents, forgotten photographs, and contemporary imagery, Unresolved Relations bridges past and present, uncovering the unspoken narratives that history books often fail to capture.

Through this work, I aim to highlight themes of border, identity, and historical silence, drawing inspiration from visual artist Rafał Milach, whose projects explore political narratives and collective memory. The project not only seeks to preserve the stories of those affected but also to spark conversations about how history continues to influence modern relationships between nations. As Unresolved Relations evolves, my goal is to expand it into a visual book, offering a more immersive storytelling experience that weaves together personal testimonies, photography, and historical research.

This project is ongoing, and I invite viewers to follow its development as I continue to explore the layers of memory, conflict, and cultural identity that define Poland-Ukraine history.
